Basketball in Barbuda

Basketball is a beloved pastime in Barbuda with several teams on the island competing every fall. Some players have even been recruited by colleges in the US and other countries – such as Kevin Samuel who was the first Barbudan to play major Division I basketball in the US.

As part of Barbuda Ocean Club’s commitment to support the island’s vibrant culture, we are helping to rebuild tennis, cricket, track and field, and basketball facilities damaged by hurricane Irma.

In 2020, we participated in the Barbuda Council Sport Department’s “Bring a Bike” racing competition, the proceeds from which were used to rebuild the basketball complex. We also hosted a two-day yard sale that raised more than EC$2,000, installed LED lights for evening games and practice, and commissioned a mural on the complex walls.

But while our efforts to support our friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors in Barbuda are off to a great start, we’re still in the first quarter. The investments we are making today will create opportunities and improve life on the island for generations of Barbudans to come … and may even inspire the next Kevin Samuel.
